This section is designed to explain some of the classes and options that the SCUBA Diving Club of CNU can help its members to complete. Bear in mind, the SCUBA Diving Club of CNU will not certify any student. The club has a connection with professional and experienced dive instructors at Dream Diving Inc. For the last year and half, the SCUBA Diving Club of CNU has had the pleasure of doing classes with Deep Dream Diving Inc. and have been very impressed. In addition they offer the club classes at discounted rates.

Below is a list of all of the currently offered classes to us by Deep Dream Diving Inc. with a brief description as well as their corresponding cost. For upcoming schedule of classes please go to our calendar page. If a class/certification you are interested in is not listed or you would like to request a specific certification be offered, please contact us. The SCUBA Diving Club of CNU wis more than willing to help you get what you need.

Free Trial aka DSD (Discover SCUBA Diving)

This is a completely free class offered by Deep Dream Diving Inc. to allow people who are interested in trying SCUBA in a consequence free and safe environment. It’s a chance for potential members to see if SCUBA is really for them, without having to drop $300 to find out like many other dive shops require.

During the course, certified dive instructors will provide fitting SCUBA equipment (the entire package) to each student and give basic instruction on what SCUBA Diving is and how to be safe. Then they take the group into the shallow end where students become acclimated to breathing underwater. Once comfortable, the dive instructors begin to teach you skills that a SCUBA diver would learn in their Open Water Certification such as getting water out of your mask, relieving pressure in your ears, sharing air, and how to regulate your buoyancy underwater.

This class takes only a few hours and is usually held on select Saturday or Sunday mornings at local YMCAs as arranged by the Club with Deep Dream Diving Inc. All you need to bring is a bathing suit, towel, and money for CiCi’s afterwards.

PADI SCUBA Open Water Certification- $325

A lifetime certification that will not expire. This is the basic and entry level scuba certification that will teach you all the essential information, skills, techniques, and knowledge necessary to be a safe diver. This is the entry level certification that will enable divers to safely dive to 60 feet.

During the course, individuals first complete the book-work, knowledge reviews and classroom sessions to show competence and understanding of principles and theory of SCUBA Diving. The next part of the course is practical in which students go to Lake Rawlings to learn to perform basic underwater safety skills.

All instruction materials, books, rental gear, air, and other rental equipment is included in the $300 cost. You are responsible for an additional $20 for weekend camping fee. There are no additional costs or hidden fees. The SCUBA Diving Club of CNU has done Open Water Certifications through Deep Dream Diving since Spring 2008 and have found them to be honest, professional, and friendly.

PADI Advanced Open Water Certification- Approx. $350

*Prerequisite required Open Water Certification

A lifetime certification that will not expire. This is a continuation of the Open Water Certification that will certify divers to depths of up to 100 feet. The course includes book work as well as instruction similar to regular open water.

The practical portion includes 5 dives focusing on specialties in diving such as Deep Diver, Boat Diver, Search & Recovery, Diver Propulsion Vehicle (underwater scooter!), Night Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Naturalist, Underwater Photographer, Wreck Diver, and Fish Identification.

*Note* To go on deeper dives at Morehead City with the SCUBA Diving Club of CNU, divers must have this certification.

Nitrox- $ TBA

*Prerequisite required Open Water Certification

This certification allows divers to use a special mix of air in their tanks with a higher concentration of Oxygen in them. This allows divers to have longer bottom times at depths less than 100 feet due to less nitrogen gas inhaled on regular air which decreasestime needed for safety stops and “deco” stops which are based on the increased levels on Nitrogen inhaled on regular air. Furthermore, individuals will feel less fatigue following diving which is attributed to the increased Nitrogen in diver’s systems following dives.
